Sweat Creek Picnic Area | Wauconda, WA
This trail provides an excellent introduction to the kind of old growth forest that once dominated this region of the Pacific Northwest. Expect stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir interspersed with open meadows and a classic creek.Learn More - U.S. Forest Service
This dog-friendly trail is maintained on an irregular basis, so be prepared to hop a few blow-downs. Wild flowers are brilliant in the spring and the larches are irradiant in fall; but the area gets heavily grazed by cattle during the summer - so try to hit this trail before June 1st!
Bring water, bug repellant, and a sunhat.
This hike is part of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.
Plan on hiking the route counter-clockwise beginning at the wooden gate just past the outhouse at Sweat Creek picnic area. Take the right hand trail option (#310) walking under the power line for a short distance before trending in a northerly direction along the prominent ridge east of Sweat Creek. After the steep climb from the head of Sweat Creek look for the Clackamas Mountain trail on the left. Dramatic views soon begin to appear to the west and south along with huge swaths of wild flowers. Easier terrain leads to the summit where a descent down the north side of the mountain to Cougar Creek will bring you to an intersection with the Cougar Road (#100) and a well marked return to the Sweat Creek parking area.
